Musical

Written By: Panache Adelaide French Theatre
Directed By: Andrew McKenzie

A tribute to Charles Trenet, icon of 20th century French popular music.

Charles Trenet is remembered as a towering figure in the history of French song. He was in some ways a link between the old music hall traditions exemplified by artists like Chevalier, Mistinguett, Claudette Colbert, and the golden age of French song, post World War II, where Edith Piaf, Boris Vian, Jacques Brel and countless others, reigned supreme.

The post-war generation all looked up to Trenet, who was one of the most popular singers in the years just before the war. He had prepared the way for the success of the new wave, and continued to work beside them and to encourage them.

Trenet’s songs (he wrote over 900!) are light, jazzy, whimsical, melodic, entertaining, gently sentimental. Internationally, his best known song is La Mer – in France he is known for countless others, ‘Ya d’la joie!, Douce France, the song which gives our show its name, Boum!, and many more. Don’t miss out on an evening of fun and delight, as Panache’s talented singers and musicians bring to life, once again, the artistry and genius of this “fou chantant”.
