On September 24th, 1908, Brycon Treharne's class at the Elder Conservatorium presented two short plays in the North Hall, and the Adelaide Repertory Theatre was born. In 1998 The Rep celebrated its 90th Anniversary, making it the oldest surviving amateur theatre company in the southern hemisphere.
Since its inception, The Rep has presented a programme of plays every year, through war, depression, change of venue and financial difficulty; a proud record of continuous theatrical entertainment for the People of South Australia. Thoughout its 90 year history, The Rep has done it all - drama, comedy, farce - even musicals! The Company was particularly noted for its costume plays including 'Romanoff and Juliet', 'The Little Foxes', 'Pygmalion', 'The Importance of Being Earnest', 'Arsenic and Old Lace', and more recently, Loriel Smart's acclaimed production of 'I Have Five Daughters'. Audiences have been kept on the edge of their seats by gripping dramas and thrillers including, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', 'Veronica's Room', 'The Business of Murder', and 'Wait Until Dark';entertained by touching dramas such as 'Steel Magnolias', 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie', and 'Tribute', and laughed at such comical gems as 'The Seven Year Itch', and 'Educating Rita'.
The Rep is a non-profit, voluntary organisation. The Board of Management oversees the various committees to ensure all is running smoothly. Committees include our costume and wardrobe team, WRAGS (Wardrobe Revival And Garment Stylists) and our production management and technical team, TARTS (The Adelaide Repertory Technical Services). Other teams of volunteers take care of Reading and Casting, Front of House, Marketing, Social Events, Financial and Secretarial.
Good organisations are about people, and we are fortunate at The Rep to have a talented, loyal and hardworking team. However, if we can share the load with more people with similar interests we will ensure the continuation of The Rep's high reputation as a leading amateur theatre company in Adelaide.
