Written By: Rodgers & Hammerstein
Directed By: Trish Hart, Assistant Director: Greg Hart, Musical Director: Heather Elliott, Choreographer: Celeste Barone

Ask anyone which musical they can recall seeing as a child and the vast majority will tell you it was Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. This treasured age-old classic is about to come to life on the Arts Theatre stage with the G & S Society’s latest production set to open on Saturday 19 July.

The G&S Society welcomes the talented Trish Hart as director with the assistance of Greg Hart. Having played the roles of Maria and Captain Von Trapp in 2004, Trish and Greg Hart are familiar with the story and the music. They will be joined by the incredible talents of Heather Elliot as musical director and Celeste Barone as choreographer.

The production team has pulled together a strong cast of adults and children with many faces familiar to the Adelaide theatre scene. Claire McEvoy takes on the lead role of Maria and is joined by Kimberly Clark as Captain Georg Von Trapp. Both Claire and Kim have a wealth of experience both on and off stage. Many would remember Claire as Polly from 42nd Street and Kim has played a variety of roles on stage Trekky Monster – Avenue Q as well as lead roles in The Boy from Oz and The Producers as well as being widely known as a music director for various companies in Adelaide.

Leading the soaring voices of the nuns are Marica Seebohm (Mother Abbess), Wendy Rayner (Sister Berthe), Megan Doherty (Sister Margaretta) and Lucy Trewin (Sister Sophia).

The cast of children is also equally talented with Kate Price playing the coveted role of Leisl. “We had 130 children audition and have been able to make up two teams that are the cream of the crop,” says Trish.

Stalwart of the stage Richard Trevaskis will be playing Max Detweiller with Bronwyn Palmer as Baroness Elsa Schraeder and Damien Quick as Rolf Grüber. The cast will also feature Grant Topham (Franz) and Lorraine Armstrong (Frau Schmidt).

This final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical.
