Performers: Akemi Schubert, piano; Robert Schubert, basset horn; Steph Wake-Dyster, clarinet; Ben Dollman, violin; Anna Webb, viola and Kim Worley, cello.

Program:
WA Mozart - Quintet for clarinet, basset horn and string trio, K580b (unfinished, completed by Franz Beyer)
Felix Mendelssohn - Konzertstück no.2 Op.114 for clarinet, basset horn and piano
Robert Schumann - Piano Quartet, Op.47

Schumann's wonderfully lyrical piano quartet is heard alongside the sublime singing sonorities of lesser-known, mellow-voiced cousin of the clarinet, the basset horn. As well as showcasing this beautiful instrument, and revealing it in partnership with clarinet, strings and piano, this program traces, in a quick sketch, the development of classical music into the romantic era.
Wine is served on arrival to be enjoyed before and during the performance. The musicians guide the audience through the program with live spoken interludes, emphasizing the connection and dialogue between the players, the music and the audience.

Kegelstatt (skittle alley) is the subtitle of Mozart’s Trio for clarinet, viola and piano, composed, according to legend, in a single day after a game of skittles with friends. The themes of friendship and pleasure inherent in Mozart’s skittle alley story are central to the Kegelstatt philosophy, along with a mission to discover and present rare and great chamber music for unusual combinations of instruments.

A small organising committee invites long-time friends from an Australia-wide network to come together for concert seasons. Rehearsals take place over one intensive week in Adelaide, during which much fun is had by all, eating, drinking, reacquainting, and taking pleasure in cooperating to bring the music to life. The performing ensemble changes according to the repertoire for each concert but is mostly drawn from a close-knit pool of regulars, formed over the years since the ensemble was founded in 2006.
Kegelstatt delights in sharing with its audiences the joyful experience of playing and hearing fine music which, due to the logistical challenges presented by its unconventional instrumentation, is rarely heard live.

Kegelstatt Ensemble is a founding member of Chamber Music Adelaide (CMA) which facilitates and supports the presentation of high quality performances of chamber music in Adelaide. CMA currently supports seven organisations – Adelaide Baroque, Ensemble Galante, Kegelstatt Ensemble, Recitals Australia, Soundstream New Music, The Firm and Various People Inc.
