When the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove the Officers decided the convicts needed entertainment. Luckily, someone had the presence of mind to bring a playscript with them. The theatrically-minded felons, under the able tutelage of Her Majesty’s Marines, put on a show. Blackwood Player’s presentation of George Farquahr’s “The Recruiting Officer” (or, “The Convicts Are Revolting”, or “Carry On Up The Botany”) is an attempt to recreate this show, complete with Mr Barrington’s poem, various sword fights, damsels in distress, gypsies, cross-dressing, coconuts, scurrilous rogues, handsome heroes, flatulence, “chickens”, and a general lack of hygiene.

Despite this the Blackwood Players assure all theatregoers of a pleasant night out.
