THE MAIDS Scarlett Entertainment Bakehouse Theatre
Drama
-- Note this is an archived listing for performances in the year 2018 -- Written By: Jean Genet
Directed By: Tony Knight
THE MAIDS by Jean Genet, first performed in 1947, is regarded as one of the greatest French plays of the 20th Century. Loosely based on a real-life murder, Genet’s play has its own unique reality based on dreams, fantasies, desires and power. Part satiric comedy, part social tragedy THE MAIDS is a whirlwind of passionate fury and love between the dominated and the domineering. The audience is led through a heightened world in which one is never certain what is true and what is illusion. What is certain, however, is that there are always the dominated and the domineering, and in this power struggle there is always the potential for revolution – real or imagined.
