Irish Albert beats cancer to make Anzac Day Concert

Adelaide entertainer Irish Albert has won his own battle to make it on stage for the Lest We Forget 8 Anzac Day Concert at Elizabeth’s Shedley Theatre on April 25 at 2 p.m.

The popular performer who has presented the Anzac Day concert with Adelaide theatre identity Matt Byrne for seven years was diagnosed with throat cancer last August.

Producer Matt Byrne said Albert had “been to hell and back since that day.”

“It’s been a tough time for Albert, as he is a professional entertainer and his voice is everything to him,” Byrne said.

“He has undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy and had to cancel his recent Adelaide Fringe season, but he has fought through it all and didn’t want to miss Lest We Forget.”

Albert said he was grateful for the great support he had received from family, friends and fans.

“People have been truly wonderful,” Albert said.

“It’s been very hard but I have done everything the doctors have asked and the tests have cleared me of the cancer.

“It’ll be a pleasure to be back on stage, with Matt, our musical director John Kings and the Lest We Forget gang.”

Byrne said this year’s concert would feature a great lineup of Adelaide talents.

“We’ll have Adelaide’s own Piano Lady Sandi McMenamin, longtime musical leading lady Chris Bussey and the cast of my July production of Wicked.

“We’ll give the audience a sneak peek of this wonderful Stephen Schwarz musical, and there’ll be variety with harpist Liesl Warner, Trumpet player Logan Conway and watch out for Billy Connolly, Benny Hill and Bob Hopeless leading the charge.

Producer Matt Byrne said the Lest We Forget concert was an important way to complete ANZAC Day.

“After the Dawn Service and the March, we think the afternoon is the perfect time for the diggers, their families and the general public to come along and enjoy an afternoon of good old-fashioned variety entertainment.

Albert said he always looked forward to the Anzac Day concert.

“But after fighting my own battle this one will be that bit more special,” he said.

“We’d love to see a big crowd there to remind people that our armed services fought for the freedom we enjoy today.”
