Matt Byrne Media will present the SA Premiere of the sensational 60s retro musical Hairspray in Adelaide and Elizabeth this July!

John Waters’ wonderfully wacky 60s story about pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad who turns Baltimore and segregation on its ear, has been a worldwide sensation on screen and stage.

Producer/director Matt Byrne can’t wait to present Marc Shaiman’s brilliant musical adaptation at the Arts Theatre from July 4 to 14 and Elizabeth’s Shedley Theatre from July 19 to 28.

“Hairspray is a Tony Award-winning musical with an unstoppable beat, a hilarious script and a massive heart,” Byrne said. “The audience will be dancing in the aisles.

“I was lucky enough to meet creator John Waters in Adelaide last year and he still can’t believe the cult 1988 movie has become a Broadway smash and been remade as another hit film.

“Hairspray is about believing in the worth of all people, and loving people for who they are.”

Byrne is delighted with the 60-strong cast, the biggest in MBM history.

“Michelle Davy was born to play the role of Tracy Turnblad and David G. Gauci understudied Edna Turnblad in the national production which never made it to Adelaide,” he said.

“Now David gets the chance to make the role his own, and there’s a great blend of experience and bright new talent in the massive cast: welcome to the 60s!”

Byrne will direct the show with Rodney Hrvatin as Musical Director and Sue Pole as Choreographer.

The show will star Michelle Davy as Tracy Turnblad, David G. Gauci as Edna Turnblad, Brendan Cooney as Wilbur Turnblad, Brady Lloyd as Link Larkin, Igor Igiraneza as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Kat Sachse as Penny Pingleton, Josh Penley as Corny Collins, Shelley Crooks as Velma Von Tussle, Danae Lloyd as Amber Von Tussle, Lisa Simonetti as Motormouth Maybelle and Dee Mariah as Little Inez
