THE WET SPOTS Adelaide Cabaret Festival The Space Until 19 Jun 2011
Review by Jamie Wright
One of the beauties of a cabaret festival is the wide variety of material – you're likely to hear any number of show tunes, torch songs and creative covers of pop favourites. But then there are a duo like Canada’s The Wet Spots, whose material is a little bit more...adult.
The pair, husband and wife Cass King and John Woods, supported by a three-piece band, sing their brilliant, hilarious and unashamedly ribald songs – all originals – and cover topics such as polyamoury, bedroom experimentation, bicuriousity and more.
All are delivered in a bright, swinging (pun definitely intended) style; think Tom Lehrer meets Cole Porter as commissioned by a very open-minded sex therapist. And while the topics they cover are certainly risque, the smooth delivery and friendly and genuine atmosphere the two create with their patter – and obvious fondness for each other – keep it from coming across as being shocking for shocking's sake.
It's a show not to be missed. Check your inhibitions at the door, and settle in for an hour of clever, bawdy and laugh-out-loud funny entertainment. |
