Printable CopyUPSTAGING HANS: A TRIBUTE TO STAGE MOTHERS
The Mars Bar
Until 17 Mar 2012

Review by Aaron MacDonald

Is there anything wrong with making eight-year-olds dress up in leather and makeup and having them dance to “Like a Virgin”? Apparently not, given that Toddlers & Tiaras has been renewed for a tenth season.

Hans’ – Mail columnist Matt Gilbertson’s camp(er) alter ego – new show is a voyage of discovery through the world of stage mothers: Gypsy Rose, Dina Lohan, Patsy Ramsey; everyone cops a serve (even Damir Dokic).

Ably assisted on the dance floor by the fantastically JonBenet-esque Lucky Bitches and his band the Ungrateful Bastards, Hans runs a tight show filled with energetic dance numbers and acerbically butchered show tunes. And if your bile levels begin to drop during the show, there are clips of Toddlers & Tiaras et al during the costume changes.

It’s guaranteed to be one of the funniest things you’ll see all Fringe. Word of warning – the audience is always a big part of Hans’ acts. If you’re shy, you should wear nondescript clothes and sit in the back row. DO NOT make eye contact with Hans under any circumstances.
