Presented at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe Festival

This was not a tribute show of the Spice Girls – presented very tongue-in-cheek and using as many shock tactics as possible it presented the group as tacky and untalented. As a genuine long-time fan of the group I was disappointed. The performers clearly have a following and the audience reaction was positive and most joined in the fun and had a good time – especially the performers! The finale of “Spice up Your Life”, with encouragement from the girls, had most of the audience standing and clapping along.

Each of the girls had a ‘spice’ name - Ginger (Alex Schulze), Cardamone (Rachael Horbelt), Turmeric (Lucy Rasheed), Cloves (Kate Bonney) and Cumin (Will Metzer) - musician. The show was essentially a pun based on spices and kitchen jokes and the audience clearly had a good time. It was meant to be light-hearted and fun with an appearance (via video) at the beginning and end of the show by the one and only Hans. These Spice Girls clearly have friends in high places!

Unfortunately, the main issue of contention was the poor sound quality. Head microphones are often difficult and with each performer using a head set, the constant crackling and buzzing was a distraction and annoyance, detracting from the performance. It is a pity that this hadn’t been sorted beforehand. Nonetheless, audience and performers persevered and enjoyed themselves.
