Review by Janice Bailey

Adelaide Youth Theatre’s Production of “Shrek JR” is nothing less than absolute sheer delight. Performing on the ‘big stage’ of the Hopgood Theatre did not faze these young people one bit. The joy of performing exudes from each and every one of these very talented performers.

Director Thomas Phillips and choreographer Shenayde Wilkinson have done an excellent job of staging each of the musical numbers written by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire.

Costume co-ordinators Tash Fennell, Lisa O’Donovan, May Tran, Bronwyn Smith, Karen Tacono and many parents and helpers have sourced and created colourful and vibrant costumes which are in keeping with the expectations of lovers of Shrek. The set design by Tuan Tran and Glenn Hill is clever and colourful as is the make up by Serena Martino-Williams.

Of the cast I saw, special mention must go to Izzy Oppedisano as Donkey. Her energy and understanding of her character was consistent, intelligent, controlled and hilarious. Jack Conroy played Shrek with consistency and empathy ensuring the audience really wanted Princess Fiona to choose him. Zali Sedgman’s Princess Fiona was sweet with just a touch of ‘sassy’ and her vocals were delightful. Deon Martino’s Lord Farquard was controlled and hilarious. Chloe Seabrook’s Wicked Witch took over the stage on every appearance and her vocals were amazing.

Overall, this would have to be one of the best hours I have spent in the theatre for some time – mainly due to the professionalism of the production and the sheer fun each of the performers was obviously having and which was transferred to the audience. Well done to all involved.
