Review by Brian Godfrey

Love him or hate him, it must be admitted that Peter Allen is an Australian national treasure. There is hardly a song that he penned that wasn’t a hit and still is today: and hardly one that people don’t know the words to. Allen was a true performer.

Looking very much like the man himself (except for darker hair colouring) and sounding almost the same in vocal quality (sometimes a touch better), entertainer Matthew Hadgraft presents quite possibly the ultimate Peter Allen tribute show.

Hadgraft exudes presence, charm and an incredible energy of his own for the full hour running time, mirroring that well known and well-loved exuberance of the Master himself.

All the Allen songs that fans expect are here, including a couple of lesser known ones that seem to have summed up his life perfectly. Hadgraft has even changed some of the lyrics slightly to give us a better look at the man: the perfect example is what he has done to the end of an already moving “Tenterfield Saddler”.

Allen is obviously Hadgraft’s idol given the enormous amount of respect he shows the performer. With the amount of information and songs performed in this show, it is very much like a one-man version of “The Boy From Oz”, but even more entertaining (if such a thing is possible).

This is a wonderful, high energy show with an excellent performer paying homage to one of the all-time great performers – Mr Peter Allen.

Don’t go to Rio, go to Gluttony to see “Peter Allen Live In Inverted Commas”.
