Open Air Theatre - Adelaide Botanic Gardens

Review by Janice Bailey

This is a modern re-telling of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Set in the beautiful surrounding of the Rose Garden which comprises the Open Air Theatre, two young men from Yorkshire take the audience on a journey of impossible love, with the music of Bruce Springsteen underscoring the tragic tale.

Alexander Wright and Phil Grainger, who have been working on stage together since they were 14, have a palpable communication. Alexander as the orator tells the story of a guy called Dave. Drunken nights in pubs and karaoke form the backdrop of this doomed story of love which ultimately ends in the Underworld of Hades. Alexander’s delivery is energetic and engaging while Phil Grainger’s melodic voice and skilled guitar playing provide the romantic element. Phil must also hold the record of the fastest guitar string change.

This tragic love story has universal appeal and continues to be a winner with audiences. With a predominantly Japanese audience on the opening night it is a testament to the skills of the two young men that their storytelling was met with enthusiastic applause and enjoyment.
