Printable CopyMYTH: THE LIVES AND SONGS OF DIETRICH, PIAF, MONROE, AND OTHER FEMALE LEGENDS
The German Club
Until 11 Mar 2017

Review by Linda Edwards

Sylvia Brécko is no stranger to Adelaide, having performed in the last two Fringe Festivals with great success, and returning this year to sell-out shows.

Brécko is an accomplished cabaret star who lives in Cologne, Germany, where she was previously also a well-known TV host. Schooled in singing, dancing and theatre arts in Cologne, Hamburg, San Francisco, and New York, her extensive training shows: she is a talented and versatile singer with a warm and powerful voice, and her renditions of songs of Dietrich, Piaf, Monroe, and others are impressive and entertaining. She is also witty and affable, and equally at home singing in English, German, and French. She is relaxed both behind the microphone and interacting with the audience (especially serenading the men).

Technical problems on her opening night in the GC lounge left her in a blackout from about 20 minutes in, and under house lights only for the rest of the show, but Brécko took the technical hitches in her stride and carried on as a true professional. In previous years she has accompanied herself on piano and piano accordion, and this year uses a ukulele to great effect.

If you are looking for a delightful evening of entertainment and some of the greatest songs by a trio of female legends, look no further.
