Kerry Reid takes the audience on a journey into a parallel universe as Miss Kitty, backed by her gypsy band. The audience is lead into ‘The Parlour’ and given a tree sprig to place at the shrine of Miss Kitty. Then, as the gong strikes, Miss Kitty enters wearing a vintage wedding gown.

Through songs of past and present we learn of Miss Kitty’s past life as a rogue M15 agent, working on ‘The Hex Files’ in the guise of an undercover, mute, gypsy fortune teller. Opening with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Reid’s vocals along with the haunting music of her band set the scene for the rest of the show. The band consisted of lead guitarist Michael Baldwin, rhythm guitarist John Denlay, keyboardist Bernadette Dempsey, violinist Hayley Purcell and bassist Paul Jankovic.

The story of Miss Kitty, who fell in love with Dracula, went undercover with werewolves and was a channeling vessel for Madame H.P Blavatsky (the co-founder of the Theosophical Society), was at times monotonous. However, the songs and arrangements and musical performances were unique and Reid’s trancelike movements were often hypnotic to watch. Her cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” brought out a likeness of Susan Sarandon in her role of Janet in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And her rendition of The Beatles “Here Comes The Sun” took on a whole other meaning, as she lost her love.

Starting 15 minutes late, and therefore running over time was unfortunate. And judging by the audience, the encore probably wasn’t necessary. A more succinct story would help for the time.
