Review by Jamie Wright

“The LoveBirds” – a cabaret show about (somewhat unsurprisingly, given the title) love and birds, features four energetic, exuberant characters clad in sparkling, iridescent costumes that seem a fusion of the aesthetics of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and an ornithologist’s fever dream. And, despite the unusual nature of the central concept, this troupe of amorous aves makes it work.

Designed and directed by Simone Page Jones, the songs are a mix of clever (with more bird-related puns and double entendres than you could shake a starling at), funny, touching and rude, and are expertly delivered by the four performers, who sing both solo and in unison.

The characterisation and depth of commitment to the role is also admirable; they are never out of quirky character, even when props prove difficult. Superbly lit in the intimacy of the Spiegeltent, and supported by a great backing band led by Adelaide cabaret maestro Matthew Carey, the result is spectacular.

Flock together and fly on down to the Garden of Unearthly Delights for an hour of hilarious, mesmerising, bawdy, birdy fun.
