Review by Jamie Wright

Combining puppetry, performance and projected video, ‘Little Grey Wolf’ draws on traditional European folk tales to tell the story of two parents who disapprove of their daughter’s obsession with a wolf from the forest and attempt to distract her by telling her stories, many of them wolf-focused.

It is very dark and violent – vivid descriptions of bloody beheadings and murders abound, as per the folk tales used as the stories within the story.

The puppetry aspects are the highlight of the show and should have been used more; both performers displayed excellent manipulative skills and the one puppet used – a haunted-looking girl-puppet – was captivating. Unfortunately, this was not enough to overcome the problems.

It fell short despite a solid concept and skilled performers – the puppetry was underused, the live-action and video over-used and the pace at best uneven and at worst distractingly slow; however, some of this may be due to their having to use a substituted performer because of the unavailability of an original cast member.

A show with potential – it’s just not quite there yet.
