Garden of Unearthly Delights

Review by Brian Godfrey

Ah! The Garden of Unearthly Delights: the perfect spot for this presentation from Netherlands’ Theatergroep WAK – it may not be everyone’s idea of a delight, but it certainly is unearthly.

It is rather hard, if not downright impossible, to describe “Levelless” – so I will let the publicity statement do it for me. It is described as a “slow–tech science-friction show”.

The company don’t just think outside of the box; they bury it and then move miles away from it.

Most shows are built around a theatre. WAK have built a theatre around a show! The big brown monolithic structure in the Garden – looking somewhat like a leftover prop from Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” – IS Levelless! (as is the name of the show).

After a slightly slow start, buffoonery kicks in proving slapstick is not dead and can still raise a laugh. Although the whole thing could end after the white-suited men disappear into the floor and before the hillbillies take over. I did say that it was hard to describe!

However, this is visual, aural and physical theatre at its technical best and displaying brilliant lunacy. It may not appeal to all, but needs to be experienced for its uniqueness.

One may never see anything like “Levelless” again – although with an innovative group such as WAK in existence, that is highly unlikely.
