Printable CopyHONKY TONK ANGELS: THE STORY OF LORETTA LYNN
The Promethean
Until 25 Feb 2012

Review by Aaron MacDonald

LORETTA Lynn is one of the icons of country music – 17 charted hits, almost 60 albums and partnerships with Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Ernest Tubbs and (somewhat bizarrely) Jack White.

Amber Joy Pouton is a country music name in her own right in Australia – four Top 30 hits, two songwriting awards, a grand finalist in the Tamworth Country Music Festival… oh, and she supported Kenny Rogers at the Festival Theatre last year.

Pouton and her band, The Holy Men, have put together a stunning tribute – not just to Loretta Lynn, but to country music as a whole. The afternoon show – in the excellent Promethean – is an hilarious and heartbreaking tour de force through some of country music’s greatest hits, and was enormously appreciated by a raucous and receptive packed house.

We’d love to tell you to go see it, but Pouton is a big believer in quality over quantity, and played just one exclusive show. However, if you have even the slightest interest in country music, the next time you see her name you owe it to yourself to buy tickets before they sell out. Which they will, very quickly.
