HARD BOILED LOLLY Garden of Unearthly Delights Until 04 Mar 2012
Review by Brian Godfrey
Some things look a lot better on paper than they do in actualisation – unfortunately, “Hard Boiled Lolly” is one of them.
Lolly P. Jones (Liesel Knievel) is a cabaret doll who moonlights as a private detective and has more than a penchant for the ladies (allowing for many lewd, crude, not-always-funny lesbian jokes). With her pianist assistant, Leonie Cohen, Knievel takes the audience through three of Lolly’s stranger cases.
The show is definitely Adults Only fare and suits its late night time slot perfectly, but its quality is inconsistent – it starts with a bang but then slows down and is not very funny. The middle of the show speeds up with some hilarious audience participation, which Ms. Knievel handles well, but then we get a third story which makes the show too monotonous.
This may appeal to those who like bad language or ‘girl on girl’ humour, or have had a couple of beers but, overall, this “Hard Boiled Lolly” has been left on the stove a tad too long.
