Waxing Lyrical Productions is an Adelaide-based theatrical company ‘dedicated to the widening of audiences unfamiliar with theatre.’ This world premiere directed by Toby Rice features Adelaide actors Krystal Brock, Kieran McNamara, Temeka Lawlor and Elliot Howard in a somewhat disturbing psychological drama which explores ‘the dark side of love’ and highlights the concept that love is often delusional and like all drugs can be lethally addictive and destructive. Hannah is the central character and to all intents, as a fitness instructor, she seems to be in control of her life. We soon find out that this is not the case.

Staged in the round, the audience are up close and personal and this highlights the emotional intensity. Performances by each of the young actors are strong and indicate a thorough understanding of the characters and of the piece. It is a world where drugs and addiction are in control and begs the question as to when people will eventually take back the control. It is not a happy place but the events which transpire are mesmerising.
