Adelaide Youth Theatre’s current production of “Elf Jnr” at the Arts Theatre is a perfect way to really get into the Christmas spirit. There is no question that the young people who perform in an AYT production are very fortunate as they have the opportunity to work with experienced performers, learning and improving their own performance techniques. It is palpably obvious that each and every one of the cast enjoys what they are doing and this is immediately translated to the audience. I found myself smiling throughout the whole show!

Director Alana Shepherdson has a wonderful cast of young people to work with and all of them perform with confidence and charisma. Connor Olsson-Jones is an energetic and likeable Buddy, taking command of the stage whenever he appears. Oscar Bridges as Michael Hobbs shows that he is ‘a star in the making’, delivering a polished performance as Buddy’s brother. Each of the principals plays their role with poise and enthusiasm. Special mentions go to Angelo Martino-Williams as Santa, Gemma Dandie as Jovie and Zali Sedgman as Emily Hobbs.

Choreography by Holly Fennell is age appropriate and when the stage is filled with these talented youngsters they are all performing with confidence and joy, which transfers immediately to the audience. Costumes, co-ordinated by Lisa O’Donovan with the help of an army of willing helpers, are colourful and beautifully co-ordinated. Mosaic Audio Visual contribute their usual professionalism while Emma Knights’ musical direction, integral to the success of the show, is seamless.

Patrons visit the theatre for a multitude of reasons. If you want to walk away with a light heart and a sense of joy then this production has delivered in spades.
