RICHARD CARPENTER IS CLOSE TO YOU Adelaide Cabaret Festival Artspace Until 10 Jun 2018 Review by Janice Bailey After his sister Karen’s untimely death, Richard Carpenter was never able to find the success he shared with Karen. Although he wrote and produced most of the best known songs by The Carpenters, it was Karen’s unique voice which the legion of fans loved. Matthew Floyd Jones embodies the persona of Richard Carpenter with gusto. He is a very talented pianist and musician and his physical comedy is at times hilarious. This show is not a biography. It is a clever, satirical parody of a sibling living in the shadow of his sister, relegated to opening malls and hosting late night shopping shows. It must be mentioned that this show is definitely not endorsed by the ‘real’ Richard Carpenter.
