The Hills Youth Theatre are currently celebrating 30 proud years of January shows, presented by students from the classes which are all held in the Stirling Theatre. It is no mean feat to assemble this number of young people, ranging from very young juniors to confident seniors, on a stage, bringing it all together as an entertaining package. Director Judy Sampson achieves this with the help of an extensive production team and many willing parent helpers. Judy and Di Mason have sourced the enormous amount of costumes required with particular attention to detail and appropriateness. Everyone involved with Peter Collins’s set design and Nigel Levings’s lighting design are to be commended for creating an authentic atmosphere. When the stage is filled with these enthusiastic youngsters the colour and spectacle is breathtaking.

The main characters are very well cast and standout performances come from Jean Collins as Buttons, Zoe Hilton and Serenna Williams as Cheryl and Beryl, the ugly sisters who are consistently hilarious, and Riordan Miller-Frost as the suitably confused and endearing Fairy Godmother. Carina Crowhurst and Ben Krieg are suitably attractive and give consistent performances as Cinderella and Prince Charming. Tom Tassone also stands out in his role of Dandini as does Matilda Butler and Zoe Muller as Snitch and Snatch. The junior mice are very cute scene stealers!

While the tempos of some of the songs could be improved, the classes all come together to create an atmosphere of fun and provide an extremely entertaining show.
