Review by Tony Busch

It’s fast, frenetic and occasionally a little OTT, but “Bucks (or A Bag of D*cks)” is certainly entertaining.

The premise is not new… a country bucks party goes somewhat wrong when the group of friends discover they really don’t like each other very much. The script flows well and the action is non-stop, even if the situations are a little predictable.

What is beyond question is the commitment to the piece by its five member cast. These are no-holds-barred performances by Julian Dibley-Hall, Leigh Scully, Cielo Croci, Will McDonald and Joshua Bell, four of whom are members of the VCA Acting Company 2016, with Scully, the fifth, already having a substantial body of work.

Oddly there is no credit for direction and it appears that the five may have directed themselves, no mean feat as the blocking and characterisations are excellent. Dibley-Hall, as producer, can feel justifiably proud of this show and the other four just as satisfied with the sum total of the ensemble.

The only criticism is the occasional bit of over-playing and the rushed delivery of some of the dialogue. Half a step back on pace would see a huge benefit.
