Review by John Wells

“Black List Cabaret” is a rolling revue of Fringe acts, a late-ish night variety show, running every Saturday night at Tandanya.

The rambling proceedings are held together by the ebullient and relaxed MC, Fringe Ambassador and drag superstar, Fez Fa’anana. He is funny and sweetly naughty, with a dazzling array of costumes.

The acts change from performance to performance. On this occasion, we are treated to some gentle Aboriginal dancing to open the show, clever and genial stand-up from Matt Ford and Dane Simpson, the debut of Lelani, a sweet-voiced ukulele player, and Fez’s own lithe calisthenics. There were magnificent performances from the ring-ins: a set from the electrifying Battersea Art Centre’s Beatbox Academy (from “Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster”), an extraordinary male pole-dancer, and a troupe of energetic acrobats from Circolombia.

Tandanya has produced and curated a great line-up at the First Nations Hub; “Black List Cabaret” is a rousing and light-hearted addition to the program.
