The Maid
Until 01 Mar 2014

Review by Maggie Wood

Bev Killick’s comedy is brave, bawdy and beautiful.

This is a woman who lives full-on and faces up to situations in an unashamedly frontal manner.

Nothing is off-limits, from big girl panties to the ravages of pregnancy, from the tides of the libido to fart jokes. She will make you uncomfortable – she does not behave as a compliant ‘nice’ middle-aged woman should – and yet it’s not all bawdy for bawdy’s sake. Like many great comics Killick sees not only the comedy in the tragedy, but also shows the comedy as the way to deal with the sadness and the crap that real life throws at us, and using her skills she has the courage to bare that part of her soul on stage.

Her closing piece, talking about how she continues to deal with the mental illness of a loved one, acknowledges the overall sorrow at the situation while also picking out the comedy and the sometimes utter silliness in the situation.

Fragility and resilience, astuteness and absurdity, love, grit, survival and hope; Bev Killick not only goes there, she takes you with her and shares her huge heart and her ultimately uplifting message.
