Review by Jamie Wright

“Ambidextrous” is a collection of three short plays by Melbourne playwright Alastair Brown, directed byRachel Baring and Daniel Rice.

In “Going Down”, Jack (Daniel Rice) and Jill (Sonya Kerr) have a conversation – and some revelations –while trapped in an elevator. “Lost Causes” sees an awkward reunion between sisters Sarah (RachelBaring) and Brigid (Sonya Kerr). Finally, “Fishing for Seagulls” features two more siblings, played byJames Deeth and Alastair Brown, at their father’s funeral.

Using only the bare-bones set with a few pieces of furniture and props, the three stories are eachdelivered well and with intensity by the performers; however, the material itself, while entertaining, isnot strikingly original and this undermines the impact somewhat.

The third story – “Fishing for Seagulls” - is the best of the three with James Deeth and Alastair Brownraising the tension with their performances.
