Garden of Unearthly Delights

Review by Nikki Gaertner

Lovers of 1940s sirens and jazz should see this show. Children of the 80s and 90s should see this show. And both will equally enjoy it.

Why? Because in an innovative and unique way Ali McGregor has managed to combine the two – reinventing the ‘trashy’ hits of pop into sultry jazz classics, with some barely identifiable should you not already know the lyrics.

McGregor is warm, humorous and comfortable on stage, quickly building a rapport with audience members. She also possesses an incredibly diverse vocal range and style, drifting comfortably between operatic soprano and smoky, soulful tones.

Accompanied by a three-piece band of talented musicians, and staged in the atmospheric Spiegeltent, McGregor will soon have you mesmerised by songs like “Never Tear Us Apart” (INXS), “I Was Made For Loving You” (KISS), “Spanish Lullaby” (Madonna), “Oops, I Did It Again” (Britney Spears) and “Barbie Girl” (Aqua), as she transports each one seventy years into the past and brands it with her own sensual style.

This show is all class – with definitely no trash! And with only one show left, make it one of your first stops this Fringe. You will be entertained.
