Review by Doug Phillips

Well, we’ve been waiting – and boy, was it worth the wait. Disney’s Australian touring production of “Aladdin” is spectacular. There was much hype in the lead-up, and every bit of that hype is warranted. Disney’s “Aladdin” delivers on every promise, and our Festival Theatre is absolutely pumping because of it.

From my perspective, I couldn’t fault anything. Now, I’m not one of these Disney-obsessed-die-hards who live breathe and sleep Disney (however if you are, you won’t be disappointed) but even for someone like me who wasn’t a big of a fan of the movie, “Aladdin” ticks all the boxes, and then some.

The undisputed crowd favourite was Gareth Jacobs as the Genie. Andy why not! He was brilliant. Some performers are destined to play certain roles and Jacobs has absolutely nailed this one.

But Jacobs is just one of a very talented cast. Each lead is strongly portrayed, and the ensemble are magnificent too. With some tough choreography to contend with, no-one stood out as a weak link. Every cast member was precise and vibrant.

The sets are incredible. I won’t describe their magnificence in detail, as that might detract from their impact. All I’ll say is that it was quite literally shocking to witness how amazing they are.

The special effects deserve a mention too. Again, these would best be witnessed in person rather than described by me, and I’m still perplexed as to how they pulled off some of the things we saw.

By now, you’ve probably guessed that I strongly recommend all of Adelaide’s theatre-lovers buy tickets. Every now and then a show comes to town that is unmissable, and this is certainly up there with the best of those.
